To me, excelling means to do something better than you did the previous time and to do it with better quality or to naturally do well. A project that I feel I am excelling in is the Apocalyptic book Project in Language Arts. In this project we are put in groups and each person in the group develops a character for the story. The “big” story is after a solar storm hits earth, groups of people in different parts of the United States come together to survive. Each person must fully develop their character and write a flash fiction piece that focuses on the character they have created. In previous years when I have had to do projects that involve writing (stories and poems), I have hated my work no matter how much I revise my work and try to make it better. This project seemed to be different. As always, I did not want to have to write because I knew it would be terrible and I would hate it. After starting it, I felt like it may actually be good. After now creating two drafts and receiving feedback on both, I am working on the third draft. Since the first draft, I have felt confident in my piece and have not felt like much needed to be changed, I still do not feel much needs to be changed. To the right you can see my third draft of my flash fiction. There is not much changed from the first draft besides mainly commas. I feel this will be my final piece and I feel confident in this one. I do not think that it is perfect, there is always more that could be done that I do not realize, but I do not feel ashamed to have people read it. Another piece to this project was the Character Statistical Sheet where we put the information for our character onto one document. We were required to create a character to be in the story but the character had to be realistic and not overshadow anything else in the book. To the right you can see the sheet for my character, Rebecca Patton. I feel that I did a good job at making her realistic and not standing out. She has a normal job, police officer, with normal hobbies and lives a normal life (by normal, I do not mean this is the normal life for all women, I just mean it is not over the top or extravagant). I did not have too much trouble with either of these things, which is why I feel I have excelled in this project over other projects.
